Exhibition “Visual Voices of Women”

Illustration

Title: "Visual Voices of Women"When: March 21 – April 19, 2025, Opening at 17:00Where: Honcharenko Centre Kryvyi Rih (4 Komertsiyna Street)

A feminist exhibition, Visual Voices of Women, is opening in industrial Kryvyi Rih. This project, built on the concept of intersectionality, explores how various aspects of women’s identities—gender, social status, ethnicity, place of residence, or profession—interact and shape each woman’s unique experience. The choice of Kryvyi Rih as the exhibition’s location is not coincidental. The city, with its industrial nature and contemporary culture, becomes a metaphor for intersectionality: a place where women’s voices gain strength, and their stories acquire particular significance.
Each artwork presented at the exhibition tells the story of women as architects of their own lives. Women run businesses, work in heavy industry, build families, participate in national defence, and voluntarily take on various social roles. At the same time, regardless of their choices, they face multilayered barriers of discrimination arising from the intersection of gender, economic status, cultural context, and societal expectations.
The exhibition’s idea is based on the understanding that women's experiences cannot be described in a one-dimensional way. The artists featured in this project address complex questions:
● How does the intersection of different identities influence the perception of women in society?● What does it mean to be a woman in an industrial city, in a military context, or amid social transformations?● What roles do women choose when their options are limited by stereotypes or external circumstances?
These questions are not left rhetorical; they find answers in artistic works that connect the local context with universal themes.
Intersectionality, as a concept, helps to grasp the complexity of women’s experiences, emphasizing that women can choose to belong to the so-called “weaker sex” or become a driving force for social change. The artists’ works reveal the local context of an industrial city: labor in manufacturing, social roles within the family, and the impact of war. Female artists from other regions of Ukraine add their voices, showcasing the diversity of women’s lives across different social, cultural, and economic conditions.
Visual Voices of Women is a project that creates a space for dialogue and a platform for social change. The exhibition invites reflection: How do we perceive women? Do we acknowledge their multidimensionality? Do we judge women for their choices regarding their social roles? How can each of us contribute to building a society where women have equal opportunities and freedom of choice?
