The Kryviy Rih Cultural Centre / KRCC invites you to an Artist Talk with artist Oksana Zharun, held within the framework of the exhibition “Visual Voices of Women.” This event offers a chance to dive into an artistic exploration of the female body, social roles, and reinterpretations of traditional concepts of femininity.
“Visual Voices of Women” is an exhibition project that explores the diversity of women's experiences through the lens of intersectionality. The featured works demonstrate how women navigate social, economic, and cultural processes while facing complex, layered challenges. The exhibition brings together artists from different regions of Ukraine, reflecting on themes of female embodiment, labor, war, societal transformation, and personal choice.
During the talk, Oksana Zharun will present her work “The Breadwinner,” featured in the exhibition. The piece combines symbolism of fertility, sacrifice, and a convergence of classical and contemporary views on the female body. In her artwork, the breast appears not only as a symbol of nourishment and care but also as an object of social discourse and imposed expectations. Red ornamental motifs on the canvas create a visual dialogue between traditional notions of womanhood and their modern reinterpretation. The artist will also share her journey of artistic development, discuss the connection between industrial context and feminist art, and explore how female artists can contribute to social change.
About the ArtistOksana Zharun was born in 2001 in the village of Vyshnopil, Cherkasy region, and moved to Kryvyi Rih in childhood. She graduated from Kryvyi Rih Art School No. 1 and the Kryvyi Rih Metallurgical Institute with a degree in coke chemistry. She combines art and science, incorporating industrial motifs and chemical research into her work. Her practice involves painting and objects that question the interaction between nature, technology, and the human body.
