"Stone and Memory: Practices of Embracing Modernist Architectural Heritage"

A century ago, the avant-garde provided its contemporaries with a vision of the future in various manifestations. As Richard Sennett, a sociologist of cities, put it, "Architectural ideas age more slowly than the ideology that underpins them and the people who promote them." How do today’s audiences perceive the vision of the city of the future, handed down to us by two waves of 20th-century modernism? Strategies of appropriation, forgetting, and museification employed by urban stakeholders create different modes of perceiving century-old avant-garde architecture.

    Kyrylo Lipatov – historian and researcher, former head of the scientific department of the Odesa National Museum of Art. Since the onset of the full-scale war, Lipatov has also been actively volunteering and working to safeguard cultural heritage sites. His current research focuses include the decolonization of memory spaces and the reinterpretation of local identity in cities, particularly his native Odesa.

The educational program consists of thematic lectures on decolonization and new cultural narratives: rethinking history and shaping new cultural narratives, revitalization approaches to the successful regeneration of urban spaces and cultural sites, industrial heritage of Kryvyi Rih, significant cultural heritage sites in Kryvyi Rih and their impact on the contemporary context, and a moderated discussion on the post-war reconstruction of the city.
