The Kryvyi Rih Center for Contemporary Culture / KRCC, in collaboration with Grey Club House, presents an exhibition dedicated to the film Pamfir by Bosonfilm, created with the support of the Ukrainian House.

The exhibition showcases costumes, props, ritual masks, sketches, and storyboards from the film directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, as well as photo and video materials about the making of the film, the vibrant folk tradition of Malanka, and the unique artistic reality of the movie.

Malanka is a traditional Ukrainian New Year's ritual involving costumed performances. The film Pamfir centers around this ritual, intertwining it with its main storyline.

The premiere of Pamfir took place in May 2022 at the Cannes Film Festival. The film has been nominated by the European Film Academy and FIPRESCI for the "Discovery of the Year" award. Over the past year, it has won more than 20 awards at international film festivals worldwide, including the Grand Prix of the 51st Molodist International Film Festival and the title of Best Film of the Year by the Ukrainian Film Academy and the Union of Ukrainian Film Critics. It was also highly acclaimed by The Guardian, Cineuropa, and Télérama (Le Monde). Over seven weeks of screenings in Ukraine, the film grossed nearly 11.5 million UAH, with more than 77,000 tickets sold. It has also been selected for programs at over 60 film festivals across 30 countries.

The Pamfir's Malanka: Dance of Life and Death exhibition was initiated by the film’s producers, Aliona Tymoshenko and Oleksandra Kostina, curated by Oleksiy Ananov, and first presented at the Ukrainian House in February 2022. Since then, it has been visited by more than 40,000 people in Chernivtsi, Lviv, and Kyiv at the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life.

"Malanka is not just a Ukrainian folk celebration but also a traditional ritual featuring handmade masks and costumes," said Kateryna Levchenko, head of the NGO Institute for the Development of Kryvyi Rih. "The exhibition Pamfir's Malanka: Dance of Life and Death in Kryvyi Rih is a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Ukrainian culture and traditions. We are proud of our history and the high-quality cinematography that is gaining recognition and awards worldwide."

The film revolves around the story of a man nicknamed Pamfir, who returns home after working abroad to reunite with his family. However, a twist of fate forces him into a dangerous path as a smuggler with irreversible consequences. The events unfold in western Ukraine during the lead-up to the traditional Malanka carnival.

The exhibition is open every Saturday from 12:00 and every Sunday from 15:00 to 19:00 at 37 Kostenko Street, Kryvyi Rih (Grey Club House). Admission is free. Additionally, a screening of the film Pamfir will take place on April 20 as part of the exhibition.
