Why does child marriage remain legal—or permitted under certain conditions—in many countries, while adult same-sex couples cannot legally formalise their relationships? Who determines which families deserve legal recognition and protection? Why do traditions and religious norms often carry more weight than individual freedom, safety, and human rights?
During the lecture, we will discuss child and same-sex marriage in a global context, the influence of social norms on legislation, the concepts of consent and adulthood, and the ways in which inequality becomes embedded in state institutions. Particular attention will be paid to why practices that can harm children continue to be justified by cultural and religious traditions while the rights of adults remain restricted.
The lecturer, Olha Kostina, is a feminist, environmental activist, and founder of initiatives advocating equal rights and social justice. She has extensive experience in human rights and gender equality advocacy.
The lecture is organised as part of the Re: Kryvyi Rih project, supported by the International Renaissance Foundation.
