The Kryvyi Rih Cultural Centre / KRCC invites you to a lecture by cultural studies scholar and art critic Yevheniia Butsikina titled "Decolonial Strategies in Contemporary Art", dedicated to exploring how art institutions, art history, and the canon are being transformed under the influence of decolonial thinking.
Decolonizing art is the process of critically rethinking the systems through which art is created, exhibited, interpreted, and preserved. It involves deconstructing colonial hierarchies, exposing imperial and nationalist narratives in art, revising museum practices, and imagining alternative models for the coexistence of cultures, memories, and aesthetic traditions.
During the lecture, we will discuss:
● ● How coloniality operates within the very structure of art — in historical narratives, institutions, exhibition formats, and the distinction between “high” and “low” art;● How decolonial strategies challenge the universality of the Western canon;● What kinds of interventions into museum spaces and art academies are proposed by artists and researchers from various regions, including Ukraine;● How decolonization is unfolding in contemporary Ukrainian art — not only as a political stance but as an artistic exploration and critical practice.
