The novel’s protagonist is Viktor Larenz, a renowned psychiatrist whose twelve-year-old daughter, Josy, disappears under mysterious circumstances. Four years later, having lost hope of finding her, Viktor retreats to a small island and tries to come to terms with what has happened.
His solitude is interrupted by the arrival of Anna Spiegel, a stranger who claims to have schizophrenia. In her visions, she sees a girl who closely resembles Viktor’s missing daughter. Hoping to finally uncover the truth about Josy’s fate, Larenz agrees to begin treating Anna. However, each conversation reveals new details and increasingly blurs the line between reality, fiction, and a troubled imagination.
During the meeting, we will discuss the novel’s psychological tension, the unreliability of human memory, and experiences of loss, guilt, and trauma. Together, we will also try to understand where therapy ends and investigation begins in this story.
