Curatorial Practice During Wartime: A Conversation with Alia Segal

Illustration

When: August 18, 18:30Where: Online

This event is dedicated to the experience of independent curator and art historian Alia Segal, which she has been building since 2022 — in the context of full-scale war, institutional instability, emerging formats of artistic collaboration, and profound social transformation.
At the core of the conversation is how war has reshaped curatorial approaches:– how artists and curators organize exhibitions in private spaces;– how self-organized initiatives become alternatives to official institutions;– how personal gestures transform into public acts of solidarity, resistance, and care.
Since 2022, Alia Segal has implemented numerous projects in collaboration with Ukrainian and international institutions, founded the apartment gallery Krucha, curated exhibitions in Ukraine and Poland, written about contemporary art for media, and worked with themes of female representation, historical memory, and cultural resilience. Her practice combines research, curatorial intuition, and artistic activism.
Alia Segal is an art historian and independent curator. Her work focuses on contemporary Ukrainian art, women’s representation, regional artistic movements, self-organized spaces, and the impact of war on culture. She is the founder and curator of Krucha apartment gallery and co-curator of the second edition of the Ukrainian section of Secondary Archive. Born in Kharkiv, she lives and works in Kyiv.
This event will be of interest to curators, artists, cultural managers, researchers, and anyone exploring the question: what can culture be in a time of crisis — and what can it offer for the future?
