The project is aimed at critically rethinking the museum narratives of Kryvyi Rih, in particular the exhibitions of the Kryvyi Rih Local History Museum. Its goal is to identify and transform colonial, imperial, and Soviet interpretations of local history that continue to shape the perception of Ukrainian cultural heritage, especially in frontline regions.
Within the project, museum collections, archives, and exhibition practices will be researched to open space for new, contemporary, and critical approaches to interpreting the history of Kryvyi Rih and industrial regions more broadly. The project brings together expertise from Ukraine and the United Kingdom. British researcher Neil Titman will conduct a series of mentoring sessions for selected participants, focusing on the decolonial analysis of museum objects. The programme will also include a series of open online and offline lectures by Ukrainian experts working on decolonisation, cultural memory, and critical museum practices.
As a result of the open call, five artists will be selected. Participants will create new artworks offering alternative, contemporary, and emancipatory perspectives on the history of Kryvyi Rih. The final stage of the project will be an exhibition in Kryvyi Rih, aimed at expanding public dialogue on memory, history, and the role of museums in shaping social narratives. The project will cover production costs for new artworks as well as travel expenses to Kryvyi Rih.
